The English Bureau: Bureau on Stand and Desk with Drawers
English writing desks with beveled flaps are called Bureau. The fold down flap of the English Bureau serves as a writing pad. Originally the cloth was called Bureau, which was placed on a table, if one wanted to write. According to the famous designer Sheraton's definition, a bureau is a "desk with drawers". To make the furniture more elegant and lighter, the lower part has often been omitted. Such a desk with delicate base is called "Bureau On Stand".
Cylinder Bureau and French Bureau
From the French, the English furniture designers learned another variety: a bureau with a rolling retractable flap, the "Cylinder Bureau". It has been used a lot in post offices and is now a popular fashion antique in the USA. Related to the bureau in construction and interior, especially concerning miniature drawers and pigeonholes, is the "French Bureau". The French Bureau is often more pompous with delicate legs.
