English display cabinets and antique display cabinets
English display cabinets as well as antique display cabinets are made for the storage of treasures. Originally the English display cabinet was very small. Usually it was placed on other furniture and it was often provided with secret compartments. These antique display cabinets can still be found on the marketplace for antiques today. From the early 18th century on, the English display cabinet was equipped with glass doors. These antique display cabinets were now also called „showcases“ and they are still being built today in the traditional authentic way.

English display cabinet and Edwardian cabinet
Above all, East Asian porcelain was kept in the English display cabinet back then and, of course, put on show. That is the reason why English display cabinets are also called English showcase. During the Edwardian period, the time of the accession to the throne of Edward VII, the Georgian cabinet was recreated as Edwardian cabinet. That's why the English display cabinet, which is still available today, is often also called 'Edwardian cabinet' in general. The Edwardian cabinet originates from around the 1890s. It was often made of fine oak, mahogany and other lovely solid woods which were commonly used for English display cabinets.
The English showcase and its purpose
Morris Antiques offers a wide selection of the English showcase which comes in different designs, shapes and colours. Solid wood species such as mahogany, rosewood and walnut are noble and easy to care for and were often used for the English showcase. The showcase is traditionally used to display dear and precious collectibles such as stamps, coins, china wares and travel souvenirs. Some of these showcases are even equipped with LED lights to perfectly serve their purpose. Furthermore the English showcase is a quality piece which will surely remain attractive and functional for decades. Some of our pieces originate in the 18th century.
